Water Tank System Cleaning, Repair and Maintenance in Scotland and UK. HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR WATER TANK RECENTLY? LEGIONELLOSIS AND LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE CAN KILL. The Health and Safety Executive are currently pushing to eradicate the causes of this group of diseases and therefore advise that water tanks and the connecting pipework should be routinely inspected and properly maintained. PREVENTION The bacteria that causes legionnaires disease, Pontiac fever and Lochgoilhead fever thrive on the organic sediment and sludge that builds up in poorly designed or badly maintained water systems. Though legionella bacteria will not usually grow in water below 20°C, organisms may remain dormant in cool water, multiplying only when the temperature reaches a suitable level. For these reasons, tanks must be insulated against heat and frost to ensure that the correct temperature is maintained all year round. Moreover, a proper maintenance programme should be introduced to keep them clean and free from foreign material. CLEANING AND CHLORINATION Merkland Tank provides an annual water inspection, cleaning and chlorination service that covers every aspect of the Health and Safety Executives recomendations. Though the most visible area is obviously the tank, the whole system needs to be treated to make certain that no bacteria survive to re-infect the cistern. The whole process often takes only a few hours and a Certificate of Chlorination will be issued after every service.
